Starting off, and a slightly earthy blend of 66% Grenache and then equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape gives up plenty of tobacco leaf, loamy earth, herbs and darker-styled fruit on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied and slightly straightforward, it should be good effort geared for early consumption. Drink 2014-2019. Surprisingly, there were no 2011s presented (nor were they submitted last year as barrel samples) and I was only able to taste these 2012s as barrel samples. Chateau Fortia’s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape gives up a classic, moderately intense nose of olive tapenade, currants and some garrigue to go with a medium bodied, layered, sweetly fruited and balanced style on the palate. It’s fully mature and should evolve gracefully on its overall balance and harmony.

In 2003, Fortia has done well with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition, a big, soft, round, heady wine with oodles of blackberry and cherry fruit intermixed with some licorice, herbes de Provence, and flowers.
