The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna Casi (100% Sangiovese) offers great value with tart and bright fruit followed by spice, leather and tilled earth. The wine is simple and straightforward in terms of mouthfeel, nothing too exciting, leading to this smaller drinking window. It's a well-priced pepperoni pizza wine with 25,000 bottles made.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna Casi renders a faithful interpretation of the Gaiole in Chianti subzone, where wines tend to show elegant but somewhat wild characteristics with prominent aromas of blue flowers and moist earth. You get plenty of aromatic intensity here, but this warm vintage has definitely added a sweet and succulent signature to this single-vineyard Riserva. Dark fruit, tobacco and leather add weight and substance to the mid-weight mouthfeel. The $24 retail price is what the wine sells for at the little shop in front of the estate. Some 25,000 bottles were produced.

The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna Casi (100% Sangiovese) is a balanced and beautiful wine with great depth and authenticity. If you like traditional Sangiovese, this wine delivers it in spades. The mouth is prickly and tight. The wine needs more time to come into its own. This is a great value wine to pair with roasted chicken or pork chops.

The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna Casi brings a whole new focus to this difficult vintage. Given the lean mouthfeel in the base Chianti Classico, I can only assume that Castelo di Meleto put its best fruit and its best efforts into this single-vineyard Riserva. The wine opens to a pretty dark color and dense concentration with soft tones of cherry fruit, blackberry, spice and leather. This is a soft and penetrating wine, and you can taste the effort and workmanship that went into making it what it is today.

The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna Casi is a soft and appealing blend of 85% Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 18 months in both botte and barrique. The fruit is super-soft and fleshy, and opulent aromas of red fruit, leather, pressed violets and dark chocolate greet the nose. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Founded in 1256, Castello di Meleto is another enchanted castle set against a fairytale Tuscan background of billowing clouds, vineyard rows and cypress trees. There are luxury accommodations and the site is often booked for events and weddings. Of the estate’s 1,000 hectares, 180 are planted to grapes including Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s among the most beautiful properties in Gaiole in Chianti.
