The 2006 Zinfandel Pietro’s Ranch (from a vineyard planted in 1905, and in this blend, 85% Zinfandel and 15% mixed blacks) is perhaps my favorite wine of all the Zinfandels. Absolutely seamless, an example of Zinfandel haute couture, this stunningly proportioned wine exhibits a deep ruby purple color, a sweet nose of black raspberries, hints of Provencal herbs (or is it garrigue?) with some chocolate and other briery fruits. Full-bodied, rich, and long, this is a tour de force in Zinfandel that should drink beautifully for at least a decade. The elegant 2005 Zinfandel Pietro’s Ranch reveals plenty of tart acidity in its elegant, medium-bodied personality. Lighter than most Carlisle wines, it is a fresh, more approachable Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 5-6 years. Previously known as the Barbieri Ranch when it was farmed by De Loach, the 2004 Zinfandel Pietro’s Lane includes 82% Zinfandel and 18% Carignan, Petite Sirah, etc. A huge wine at 16.7% alcohol, it is a dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, extraordinarily rich, full-throttle, heady, intense effort to drink over the next 7-8 years.
