Made with organic fruit, the 2016 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is open and accessible, showing a graceful and pure quality of fruit with dark cherry, blackberry, spice, tar and tobacco. The mouthfeel is streamlined and compact, but what this wine lacks in power it makes up for in elegance. This sample from 2016 was sent along with a bottle from 2010 so that I could track its impressive bottle evolution. In fact, I widened my suggested drinking window after tasting that older bottle.

Made with organic fruit, the 2015 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon (aged in tonneaux for 12 months). This is the flagship wine made by this estate, and it has been in production since 1925. This warm vintage opens to abundant fruit with black cherry and blackberry at the front. Softer tones of spice, leather and tobacco fill in the rear. You get great value in this easy-drinking mid-weight Tuscan red. Some 70,000 bottles were produced.

The 2013 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana (80/20 Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) shows thick lines and rich concentration. The wine opens to aromas of cherry liqueur, dried raspberry and blackberry marmalade. The aromas peel back in ripe and chewy layers. Balanced spice and tobacco add extra dimension and layering at the back. The finish is soft and succulent.

The 2012 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in tonneaux for 12 months. This is a generous and expressive wine that offers a great combination of rich primary fruit and savory tones of leather and spice from the measured oak aging. Blackberry and dried cherry emerge on a first aromatic wave. The wine is structured and firm in texture.
