The 2010 Chardonnay Selezione has all of the delicate nuances that the straight Chardonnay doesn’t quite have, and when all the little things are added up, the sum is a compelling, vibrant wine of notable pedigree. Slate, pears, melon and French oak are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The Chardonnay Selezione is broad and expansive in every direction, with fabulous energy but no sense of heaviness. Another year or two in bottle should help the wine come together. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. My wife and I sat down for a late summer dinner at L’Androna, the best restaurant in Grado, a gorgeous seaside town in Friuli. I had just returned the day before from two weeks in Burgundy, where I tasted just about every great 2009 white Burgundy, including virtually all of the benchmarks. Within that context, the next white I tasted should have been disappointing. Instead it was a revelation. The wine? Borgo del Tiglio’s 2009 old-vine Friulano Ronco della Chiesa. On this night, the Ronco della Chiesa was every bit the equal of the vast majority of the wines I tasted in Burgundy, and frankly far better than the average. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari is one of the leading lights in Friuli. His wines deserve far more recognition than they typically receive. The 2009 Chardonnay Selezione is another of the towering wines in this lineup. Rich, voluptuous, but also intensely mineral, the Selezione impresses for its refined texture and inimitable class. Subtle notes of French oak and spices frame the gorgeous, explosively pure finish. Though very young, this offers tons of potential for the future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari has few peers in Friuli, or Italy for that matter. This is a gorgeous set of truly exceptional world-class whites. As always, the only issue is finding the wines. The 2007 Chardonnay Selezione (dark grey label) is a stunning, mineral-driven Chardonnay with layers of flavor that emerge from the glass. The wine is at once more taut and bigger than the regular bottling, with impeccable balance, subtle use of oak and a distinctly Burgundian personality. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017. This is a wonderful set of new releases from Borgo del Tiglio and proprietor Nicola Manferrari. It’s a shame these wines are so hard to find in the US, because they are terrific.
