The 2015 Palacio del Burgo Crianza is pure Tempranillo with higher ripeness and more presence of oak, aged in new, second and third use American oak barrels with high toast for one year. I found this too oaky for my taste, and the aromas of coconut, smoke and vanilla dominate the nose. The palate revealed sweet tannins, round and lush with lots of balsamic flavors, hinting on mint and eucalyptus. For fans of oaky Rioja. 72,000 bottles produced.

The 2013 Palacio del Burgo Crianza, which is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, had more woodsy, herbaceous notes that made it less favorably rated than the Tinto, but for those looking for a more mature and herbal style, this will fit the bill.

These are custom cuvées made specifically for importer Fran Kysela. Palacio del Burgo is a large estate, even for Rioja, with over 494 acres of vines. All three of these inexpensive offerings are impressive and merit serious interest from thrifty consumers. The 2011 Crianza (90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano) spends 12 months in American oak barrels. It reveals notes of vanilla, new saddle leather and sweet black cherries in a medium-bodied, elegant as well as complex and concentrated style. A more classic Rioja than the 2013 Tinto, it should drink well for 2-3 years.

The 2010 Palacio del Burgo Crianza is pure Tempranillo from different vineyards around Alfaro in Rioja Baja aged in American oak barrels for one year. It has a very strong raspberry juice aroma with some lactic and spicy notes, polished tannins, juicy and fresh, with a pleasant bitter finish. Easy to drink. Drink now-2015. I found a slightly animal character in some of the wines from Bodegas Burgo Viejo.
