The well-made, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2002 Merlot (a blend of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Malbec aged completely in French oak) reveals notes of mocha, dried herbs, berry fruit, and a whiff of chocolate, a firm finish, and medium body. Barnadown Run’s 2001 Merlot is a sophisticated example of this varietal, which rarely does well outside France and Tuscany. Notes of coffee, chocolate, berry fruit, and herbs are present in this dark ruby-colored, medium-bodied, nicely-textured offering. Austere tannin in the finish might prove problematic.
