The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a rich, sun-kissed bouquet of baked plum, cherries, espresso roast, dark chocolate, grilled meat and forest floor, marrying the "sauvage" signatures of Mazis-Chambertin with some hints of sur maturité. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and ripe, with a deep core of rich fruit, an imposing framing of tannins, and excellent mid-palate concentration. Its slightly roasted character evokes the 1990 red Burgundy vintage and lends the wine a rather old-fashioned style which may prove divisive, but for those who appreciate these qualities—for which my score reflects sympathy—it will deliver considerable pleasure over several decades.
