The serious, dark ruby/purple-colored 1993 Syrah American Tradition Reserve reveals an intense, cassis, smoky, peppery character, full body, a backward personality, admirable length, and gobs of sweet Syrah fruit. Although wrapped in a cloak of tannin, formidably structured, and built for the long haul, this wine opens beautifully in the glass. As it opens, a smoky, bacon fat character reminiscent of Cote Rotie gradually emerges. Give it 12 more months in the bottle and drink it over the following 10-12 years. It is a candidate for an outstanding score after more aging.
