Both of Byron's 1996 Chardonnays are extroverted, tropical fruit-dominated wines.The 1996 Chardonnay Estate exhibits an evolved light gold color, as well as a knock-out nose of pineapples, tangerines, and orange blossoms. Byron’s priciest Chard, fermented with native yeasts, unfiltered and draped in toasty, charred oak. Bursts with all kinds of citrus and ripe peach flavors. It’s young, though, and almost a shame to drink it now. Best to cellar this showy, flashy wine for a year or so.——S.H.(7/1/1999)—— 91
