Leroy's 1987 Pommard Les Vignots has a deep ruby, almost opaque color, exceptional concentration of chocolaty, plummy, cherry fruit, a spicy character, and ample tannins in the finish. This wine deserves great recognition. It is indeed a great wine in this vintage. It appears Leroy knows how to extract flavor and character from this vineyard. It should reach full maturity by 1991-1992.
The 1987s of Lalou Bize-Leroy are often just a notch below her phenomenal 1985s. They provide additional convincing evidence that the 1987 vintage is probably the most underrated Burgundy vintage (along with 1980) in the last 20 years.
