The 2001 Rainero is a blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon aged in small French oak barrels. It presents expressive layers of scorched earth, smoke, herbs, sweet toasted and jammy dark fruit with excellent persistence. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016. Fairly ripe and round, with earth, fruit and oak wrapped into a well-wrapped package. Medium-strength in the mouth, with good but not stellar blackberry and raspberry flavors. Finishes a touch sharp and short. Solid overall.——M.S.(9/1/2006)—— 87
