This winery has made significant progress with respect to its fine wine program. The bizarre, vegetal wines of the past are history. Santa Barbara is now producing a mixed line-up of generally fine Chardonnays, good Pinot Noirs, and a curious Beaujolais-like Zinfandel. The excellent 1990 Chardonnay-Lafond Vineyard exhibits a complex, Meursault-like nuttiness, excellent acidity, a generous yet judicious use of toasty new oak, and plenty of rich, buttery, hazelnut fruitiness. This single vineyard offering from Santa Barbara is consistently the winery's best Chardonnay.
