The 1989 Rasteau Cotes du Rhone-villages is a full-bodied, rich, concentrated, powerful wine from a superb vintage. The saturated purple color, big, peppery nose of black-cherries, leather, and spices, and the deep, full-bodied, super-concentrated flavors make a noteworthy impact on the palate. This mouthfilling, velvety-textured wine is ideal for drinking over the next 5-7 years. Domaine St.-Gayan ages its red wines in large wood foudres longer than most Rhone Valley producers. Given the less-exciting vintages of 1991 and 1992 for many Rhone Valley appellations, late releases, particularly from 1990 or 1989, can be a windfall for consumers.
