The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru les Fontenys was showing a rather bretty, animally nose that you might misidentify as Bandol more than Burgundy! There is something very medicinal about this Gevrey-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied, again, rather Bandol-like in style, quite powerful and solid, yet missing the class of more recent vintages from the estate. It is a typical 1999 in terms of its fruit concentration, though it does not have the delineation and complexity that either Roty or Fonteny can bestow. Tasted June 2016.
