The Humbrechts believe 1997 is the greatest Gewurztraminer vintage since 1990, with the possible exception of 1994. Readers who crave ostentatious Gewurztraminers will flip for Zind-Humbrecht's flamboyant 1997s.Regrettably, only 500 bottles of the stunning, gold-colored 1997 Gewurztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain exist. The result of microscopic yields (12-15 hectoliters per hectare), this nectar's aromas and flavors are presently dominated by fresh mangoes. When all is said and done, this full-bodied, detailed, magnificently refined, and hugely flavorful wine may merit a perfect score. The manner in which Humbrecht combines astronomical richness and power with impeccable precision and purity is pure genius. Stones, chalk, minerals, Asian teas, flint, roses, and innumerable tropical fruits are found in this blockbuster. Minutes after having been emptied, my glass continued to present awesome mineral and honeyed fruit scents. Readers fortunate enough to acquire this benchmark setter should consume it between 2001 and 2010.Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel (510) 524-1524.
