Diane de Puymorin’s 2005 Costieres de Nimes is 30% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 40% Carignan, and another stunning reminder of what a hotbed of winemaking talent, fortuitous microclimates, and sensational value the Nimes area represents. (See under “Chateau d’Or et de Gueules” for her wines from that property.) Black cherries, roasted chestnuts, marjoram, and dark chocolate in the nose prepare you for a rich, diverse spread of black fruit, herbs, rare roast beef, toasted nuts, espresso, chocolate, peat, and lobster shell reduction on the palate. Amazingly rich (considering its price), this “l(fā)ittle” red is also endowed with firm yet fine tannins that in no way interfere with the sheer sumptuous wash of fruit and savory animal and mineral suggestions in the finish. While irresistible, a wine this well-endowed and well-balanced (not to mention this cheap) can probably be enjoyed for at least the next 12-18 months.
