The 2000 Capitels des Mourgues is a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache from the estate's finest parcels (nearly 40 years old). It spends time in large demi-muids, and is bottled unfiltered. Although closed, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a tight but promising nose of loamy soil scents intermixed with garrigue, black cherry liqueur, and pepper. Ripe, structured, and moderately tannic, it requires 1-2 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014. This is an exceptional value. If readers have not yet discovered the wines from this excellent estate, it's about time. This is one of my favorite estates from Costieres de Nimes, the sun-drenched appellation south of Chateauneuf du Pape, as well as one of France's top sources for wine values. It is also an area where some of America's cutting edge importers have been extremely successful in finding top notch Costieres de Nimes estates (i.e., Robert Kacher and Peter Weygandt). Mourgues du Gres produces an excellent rose (usually one of my summer slurpers). Readers should be watching for the release of the 2002, although given the vintage conditions, it may not be as good as the 2001.
