The 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve (to my knowledge, this is the first old vine cuvee produced at this estate) possesses toasty vanillin notes from new oak casks, as well as gobs of sweet, chocolate, cherry, herb, olive, and coffee-like aromas. The hickory and jammy black-cherry flavors offer significant extract, glycerin, and power. This is a bold, rich, chewy, dense, slightly rustic, but impressively-endowed Chateauneuf du Pape. If it develops more finesse, it will easily merit an outstanding score. It will last for 10-15 years. This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.Importer: a Christopher Cannan Selection, Europvin USA, Watertown, MA; tel. (617) 924-7620
