As disappointed as I was with the slightly oxidized, bizarre 1991 Chardonnay from Cousino-Macul, this 1990 Cabernet is one of this winery's better efforts over recent vintages. This offering is their regular cuvee, which sells for $2 less than their Antiguas Reserva. This 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe, richly fruity (jammy black-cherries and cassis), medium-bodied, soft and round, and finishes with some authority and extract. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. If you want to try a more aged example, the 1988 Antiguas Reserva ($10) is an 85 point wine. It is a good value, but the 1990 Cabernet has more richness as well as more upfront appeal; the 1988 offers a more pronounced herbaceous character and an earthy, soft taste.
