Chante Cigal’s 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Extrait Blanc is a knockout effort that’s up there with some of the best whites in the vintage. Comprised of 60% Roussanne and 40% Grenache Blanc, aged all in barrel, it offers more toast and brioche than the classic cuvee, yet has similar lemony fruit, white flowers and citrus-blossom qualities all soaring from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant and classy, with integrated acidity, it’s a smoking white to drink over the coming 3-4 years, although I’ve no doubt it will evolve for longer as well.
