The 2007 AURU is Portal’s luxury bottling. Given the steadily increasing quality from this winery, one remaining question is whether the third release of this luxury bottling will keep pace and offer some distinction in return for the big jump in price from the regular reservas and the like. Relative value issues aside, this is a very fine Auru, probably the best yet. It is a blend of Touriga Nacional (65%), Tinta Roriz (30%) with a dollop of Touriga Franca to round it out. Youthful and exuberant when first tasted, it is silky and elegant, bursting with flavor and impeccably balanced. With air, it shows what it really has though—underlying structure, finesse, grip on the finish, as well as some complexity as the fruit develops. There was a touch of rhubarb on the palate, and we will see where the flavor profile goes as the fruit develops. This will not impress with either pure power or depth, but I think this will be a beauty. There were 1,883 bottles produced, plus some larger format bottles. Drink now-2022.
