The 2007 Langhe Chardonnay Bastia is soft and minerally in its expression of varietal tropical fruit. To be honest, I am not a fan of Chardonnay in Piedmont, but this fresh, perfumed style is undeniably attractive. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
Conterno-Fantino is without question one of Piedmont – and Italy’s – very finest producers. While the estate’s Barolos get most of the attention, readers will find the more affordable wines just as delicious. Unfortunately, this year I wasn’t able to taste the Barbera d’Alba Vignota and Langhe Nebbiolo Ginestrino, but in most vintages, they, too, are highly rewarding wines.
