The 2006 XS is a kitchen sink blend of Alicante Bouschet (33%), Trincadeira (31%), Aragones (16%), Alfrocheiro (13%) and Tinta Caiada (7%), all of which are conspicuously noted on the front label. In the 2006 vintage, which created difficulties in many places in Portugal, this is a pretty decent effort for an inexpensive wine. Softly textured, but bright, sweet and lively, with intensity on the finish, it has a flavorful finish, the fruit driven home by the acidity. The mid-palate is not terribly concentrated, though, and with air, the wine thinned dramatically, losing flavor, too, and tempering my initial enthusiasm. This has some merits, though.
