The 2006 Alchemist, a blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, has put on weight and depth. It is a powerful, big, full-bodied wine exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color as well as copious quantities of roasted coffee, creme de cassis, melted licorice, and chocolaty notes. Seriously-endowed with a big upside, it should keep for 10-12 years.
Booker Vineyard, a 40-acre vineyard planted on limestone soils just west of Highway 101, continues to strut its stuff after its impressive debut in 2005. I retasted several of the 2006s I had last year, and the ratings were slightly elevated.
