Produced from 35 to 70 year old vines, the dark ruby-colored Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes displays intense mineral and sweet red berry aromas. It has a well-concentrated, highly-structured, rustic, medium-to-full-bodied personality with cherries and roasted herb flavors. The wine's admirable length ends on a slightly hard tannic finish (typical for many red Chassagnes). Anticipated maturity: 1999-2004. Note: The price for this wine was not available because the domaine's US importer does not purchase it. The wine may, however, be available through other sources, particularly the gray market.
The bottling line was churning away when I visited this estate in January and many of the wines I tasted had been bottled but were not yet corked. Bernard Morey's reds offer excellent concentration, sweet fruit and dark colors.
