The 2003 Syrah Grand Firepeak Cuvee Firepeak Vineyard’s northern Rhone-like bouquet of bacon fat, pepper, black currants, herbs, and sweet vanillin from new oak is followed by a medium-bodied wine with sweet fruit, a creamy, soft texture, low acidity, and a seductive, lush palate. Our panel tasted Baileyana’s regular Firepeak 2003 Syrah earlier this year and found it a little green, but still a good wine. This best block selection is richer, but still fairly green and peppery, with sharp acids. ——S.H.(12/31/2005)—— 87
