Gianni Brunelli’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a promising wine. A medium red, it opens with attractive spiced, floral aromas. Although it offers excellent depth as well as length, it seems to narrow on the mid-palate, and ultimately conveys a rough around the edges, rustic personality. A very classic Brunello, with aromas of plum, dark cherry, flowers and citrus. Full-bodied, with fabulous fruit and velvety tannins. Everything is in the right place. The best ever from this producer. Best after 2012. 400 cases made. -JS
