The Buitenverwachting estate’s 2007 Sauvignon Blanc smells of gooseberry, sage, boxwood, and lime zest. In the mouth it offers decidedly stony, saline, and chalky undertones to its almost overbearingly zesty and pungent citrus, gooseberry and herb themes. Subtle oiliness accompanies the tactile intensity of this wine’s bracing finish. Some self-styled devotees of “true Sauvignon” are going to love the outrageous herbacity on exhibit here, while it might cause others to wince. (Phenolic intensity also characterized Buitenverwachting’s 2007 Riesling, which however was a wine with a somewhat less distinctive personality.) Importer: Cape Classics, New York, NY; tel.
