It is an undisputable fact that Gewurztraminer was the least favored varietal for the 1995 vintage in Alsace. The 1995 Gewurztraminer Altenbourg Cuvee Laurence is a dry, floral, exotic, decadently-styled wine with medium to full body, and gobs of honeyed, cherry fruit intermixed with intriguing spice and earthy scents. The wine is powerful and rich, with a dry finish. It should drink well for a decade. Alsace wine enthusiasts will no doubt argue for decades as to whether Domaine Zind-Humbrecht or Domaine Weinbach produces this fairy tale region's most profound wines. The ZH wines tend to be slightly sweeter, with higher alcohol. Since Laurence Weinbach began making the wines, Domaine Weinbach's wines are drier, although still authoritatively powerful, rich, and concentrated.Importer: Vineyard Brands, Chester, VT; tel.
