If my memory is correct, the first case of Chateauneuf du Pape I ever purchased was the 1970 Cuvee du Vatican (one bottle remains in my cellar). I am impressed by how well the 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out. It may be the finest wine Felicien Diffonty has produced in several decades, and my score may turn out to be conservative. This is a big, old-styled, classic, blockbuster Chateauneuf du Pape with a saturated garnet/plum color, a gorgeous display of roasted herbes de Provence, licorice, kirsch, truffles, and earth. Explosive on the palate, with full body, mouth-coating glycerin, and copious quantities of jammy fruit that cascade down the gullet with no hard edges, this is a luscious, flamboyant wine with a terrific personality.
