The dry 1994 Tokay-Pinot Gris Herrenweg Turckheim was made from less than a ton of fruit per acre (11 hectoliters per hectare), and attained 16.1% natural alcohol. This is a huge, dense, unctuously thick, cherry, butter, exotic fruit-scented wine with massive body, gigantic proportions of glycerin, and that fabulous lusciousness and purity that is a hallmark of all the Z-H wines in 1994. It should last for 20-25 years given how slowly this domaine’s 1983 and 1989 Tokays have aged. Of course, there are not too many dishes with which one can drink a wine like this (or does one eat such a wine?), but smoked meats, foie gras, and lobster are ideal accompaniments. Although too young and unformed to drink at present, 2-3 years of cellaring should bring it closer to maturity. If you are looking for an utterly mind-blowing white to put away for 20-25 years, this should be your choice. With respect to the recently released wines, Olivier Humbrecht stated that he had never seen such intensely ripe Pinot Gris with such high levels of acidity. The importer for the Zind-Humbrecht wines for most of the United States is Wine Markets International, Woodbury, NY; tel.
