The 2005 Shiraz (60%) - Mataro (40%) “Landrace” is purple-colored with a brooding nose of earth, truffle, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. The wine has attractive flavors, but is in need of greater depth and there is a slight hole in the mid-palate. Several years in the cellar could bring out more fruit but that is a gamble. Congratulation to young Mr. Tscharke for an impressive collection of wines!
Glaymond’s owner/winemaker is Damien Tscharke (whose namesake winery is reviewed in this report) with winemaking consultation from superstar Chris Ringland. The vineyards are owned by the Tscharke family which had previously sold the fruit to larger producers. The vines are in a tenderloin portion of the Barossa for growing top-class Shiraz. It should be noted that all of these wines except for the “Glen’s Selection” were reviewed from barrel samples by Robert Parker in Issue 167.
