Nicholson River is located in Gippsland, four hours east of Melbourne, in a mild, coastal climate. The owner/winemaker is Ken Eckersley, a self-described flavor fanatic. The 2005 NR Chardonnay was sourced from 27-year-old vines with modest yields of 2 tons per acre. It was aged in 40% new Francois Freres barrels and 60% one-year-old French oak. Medium gold-colored, it offers aromas of toast, butterscotch, baked apple and poached pear. This is followed by a medium-bodied Chardonnay in which the oak has been totally integrated. Mouth-filling and rich, with superior length, this might be the ideal match for salmon in sorrel sauce. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.Importer: Dan Philips, The Grateful Palate, Oxnard, CA; tel.
