A new wine from Villa Poggio Salvi, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Pomona offers an exciting, albeit international interpretation of the Sangiovese grape. There is plump fruit backed by spicy notes of oak toast, almond, cinnamon and nutmeg. Delicate tones of licorice, cola and menthol herb also appear as distant background notes. The wine is soft and yielding in the mouth and presents all the qualities necessary for near-term drinking. The thinner, more acidic mouthfeel would also pair well next to foods that feature butter or cheese.
