Unlike many wines from this vintage, the 1995 is approaching full maturity. It exhibits a deep plum/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of figs, prunes, black raspberries, and blackberries (always a hallmark of this old vine cuvee). Full-bodied and unctuous, with high tannin, glycerin, and richness, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 17-18 years. Catherine and Sophie Armenier continue to fashion one of France’s greatest wines. Called a "correct" vintage by the Armenier Sisters, the 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is more firm, focused and fresh than the more opulent styled 1998. Giving up lots of garrigue, cedary spice, cured meats and ample ripe fruit, it's full-bodied, elegant and seamless, with firm tannin that I suspect will always be present. Given the elevated tannin and mature feel, I suspect it's best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
