A 2000 that bears mentioning is the 2000 Montagia (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc), a joint project between winemaker Ed Sbragia and well-known Hall of Fame quarterback, Joe Montana. It is a good effort, but reveals the vintage’s leanness. The 2000 possesses a deep ruby/purple-tinged color as well as attractive aromas of black currants intermixed with smoke, earth, and a hint of underbrush. It will be interesting to see what this cuvee offers in the far better years of 2001 and 2002. Medium-bodied, with dry, austere tannin in the finish, it should drink well for 10-12 years.
