Marked by scents of honeyed pear and caramel, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure Roussane—a medium to full-bodied effort that was all barrel fermented and aged in new French oak—blew me away for its amazing freshness, silky texture and long, resounding finish. I don't think there's any reason to delay gratification, but there doesn't seem to be any hurry to drink this up, either.
