Badiòl(fā)a is a historic vineyard farmed by the Mazzei family, but this is the first Gran Selezione expression made with its fruit. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòl(fā)a offers terrific intensity and purity that shows power, but it also holds back to affirm a sense of elegance. In the true sense of the word "balance," the wine falls squarely in between those two descriptors. Wild berry fruit, button mushroom, blue flower, cola and underbrush are tightly woven together on the bouquet. Despite the heat and natural fruit concentration associated with this vintage, this wine delivers a special and enduring sense of weightlessness. A mere 3,000 bottles were made.
