The 2006 Chardonnay “M3 Vineyard” is medium straw-colored. It offers up notes of toast, honeysuckle, white peach, and pear. Made in an elegant, restrained style, the wine is nicely balanced and should evolve for several years. It will show even better accompanied by Dover sole. Shaw & Smith is a collaboration of cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW. The wines are all produced from Adelaide Hills fruit, most of it from their estate vineyards. On the oaky, buttery side, but well made in its idiom, with toffee and caramel flavors to go with the buttered popcorn and pain grille characters. Focused, citrusy fruit emerges on the finish, and it is possible that this wine will show better in another year or two.——J.C.(6/1/2008)—— 88
