The latest edition of Zilliken’s successful 3,000-case brand, 2004 Riesling “Butterfly” A.P. #14 (which, incidentally, carries the same name – not the translation “Schmetterling” - inside Germany) combines fruit from Saarburg’s Rausch and Antoniusbrunnen in a dry-tasting but not technically “trocken” wine of 11.5% alcohol. Sweet cherry, toasted almond, and wood smoke notes in the nose lead to a glossy palate combining a sense of stuffing and mouth-filling fruit and slate that will, however, still strike those who aren’t familiar with German Riesling as “l(fā)ight”.
