It’s labeled Cabernet Sauvignon, but includes both Syrah and Mourvedre in the blend, along with Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Unusual, but it works, creating a jammy wine with voluptuous black cherry and cassis fruit. It opens relatively soft and forward (for a Woodward Canyon Cab), then delivers a burst of sweet cherry fruit, backed with barrel flavors of cinnamon and mocha. All hand-harvested and hand-sorted, this is a spectacular effort—racy, sharp-edged, showing a steely, stony definition that is rare in the New World. Woodward Canyon wines need time and reward cellaring, but that is not to say that these wines cannot be savored when young. It’s just that they will improve dramatically with time.
