The 2010 Tributo Malbec is blended with 8% Carmenere and 5% Cabernet Franc is raised for between 12 and 14 months in French and American oak. It has a fine blackberry and cassis scented bouquet that will have commercial appeal. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins and a dense, barbecue tinged finish. Drink now-2014. Caliterra is 1,087 hectare estate of which 250 hectares are dedicated to hillside plantings of vines that are farmed organically. Caliterra’s 2009 Tributo Malbec contains 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot in its makeup. It underwent malolactic fermentation and additional aging in French oak. Dark ruby red in color, it exhibits pleasing notes of cherry blossom, spice box, tobacco, and cranberry. In the glass it comes up short in depth and concentration albeit with ample tasty fruit. Vanilla, wood shavings, charcoal and floral berry aromas come with a hint of minty green. The palate has a healthy but common grabbiness to it, with flavors of black cherry, cassis and herbs. Almost cloying on the finish, with candied notes and vanilla. A strange wine that doesn’t fully come together.——M.S.(12/1/2010)—— 85
