The 2009 12 Meses is a 100% Prieto Picudo aged in oak. It proffers a bouquet of earthy minerality, exotic spices, and black raspberry. Fresh and vibrant on the palate with some elegance, this tasty effort has a firm acid structure that will keep it drinking well for another 5-6 years. This is an impressive set of new releases from Villacezan, located in the newly created DO of Tierra de Leon directly north of Toro at a higher elevation. The 2005 Villacezan Diomeses is 100% Prieto Picudo which spent 12 months in French and American oak. Dark ruby-colored, it reveals an expressive Pinot Noir-like perfume featuring cedar, spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry aromas. Supple, ripe, and sweet, the wine nicely conceals enough soft tannin to permit another 2-3 years of evolution. Drink this balanced, lengthy effort from 2010 to 2015.
