Available in a 375-milliliter bottle, the Conti Capponi Villa Calcinaia 2012 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico reveals a luscious dark amber color with opulent aromas of candied fruit, caramel, maple syrup and brown sugar. Most importantly, the wine delivers so much character and richness and does so without feeling viscous or heavy. There are end notes of wet earth and button mushroom. I'm always very thankful to review Vin Santo because it is a precious category of wine made by a small group of passionate and hard-core producers.

Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is among the most precious and carefully crafted wines made in Italy, and this expression is a clear labor of love. The Conti Capponi Villa Calcinaia 2011 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico (packaged in a petite 375-milliliter bottle) pours forth slowly with a rich copper or dark amber color. This delicate Vin Santo is a blend of mostly Trebbiano with smaller parts Canaille and Malvasia aged in small oak barrel for 96 months. This rich dessert wine is redolent of canned peach, maple syrup, brown sugar and caramel.

The 2010 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Conti Capponi shows resin, brown sugar, honey and caramel. Packaged in a 375-milliliter bottle, my fingers are sticking to the keyboard as I write this. The blend is 70% Trebbiano, 15% Canaille and 15% Malvasia, and the wine ages in traditional caratelli oak barrels for an extended 96 months. Only 1,069 precious bottles were released.

The 2009 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Conti Capponi is a traditional blend of 70% Trebbiano, 15% Malvasia Bianca and 15% Canaiolo. The wine reveals a dark amber color with distant ruby or copper hues that could come from the red Canaiolo grape used in the blend. This is a robust and determined dessert wine with slightly savory or smoky tones of spice, roasted chestnut and caramelized sugar. Despite the wine's generous, saccharine-driven richness, this wine culminates with balanced acidity that ultimately keeps the palate refreshed and invigorated. The wine ages in small caratelli barrels made with Slavonian oak for 96 long months. Only 1,270 bottles were produced.
