I do not understand winemakers who fashion Euro-styled, non-vintage, basically uninteresting blends, but I do like Tensley’s non-vintage Detente Red Table Wine (although philosophically, I think the idea is more gimmick than substance). Composed of fruit (from the 2008 vintage) from the Gigondas estate of Domaine de Montvac (50%) and from Tensley’s sources (50%), the final blend is 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and 5% Mourvedre. A lovely red, it exhibits complex aromas of garrigue, crushed rocks, blue and red fruits presented in a medium-bodied, elegant style. It tastes like exactly what it is – a blend of southern Rhone grapes and Santa Barbara fruit. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years. Joey Tensley, one of Santa Barbara’s budding superstars, produces a sensational portfolio of wines, save for his only weak spot – Grenache. The Syrahs continue to go from strength to strength, and some are realistically priced for the high quality.Tel. (805) 688-6761; Fax (805) 688-0591
