Slightly better, the opaque purple-colored 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (6,000 cases made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers sweet blueberry and black currant fruit intermixed with cedarwood, damp earth and forest floor notes. Surprisingly thick, unctuous and rich with amazing intensity as well as silky tannins, it should be drunk over the next 7-10 years. One of my favorite value wineries is Summers Estate, whose winemaker, Ignacio Blancas, does a terrific job of getting maximum varietal character from these realistically priced wines.Tel. More limited in availability, but still a bargain is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (only 1,450 cases produced). It possesses a dense purple color, striking intensity and plenty of charcoal-infused black currant and blackberry fruit as well as a chocolate earthiness. Displaying a higher price, the more serious, outstanding, opulent 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is deeper, richer, and fuller with silky tannin, and oodles of black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, smoke, and lead pencil shavings. Summers has been quietly perfecting Cabernet under the radar. The ’04 continues a string of successful vintages. It’s riper and more accessible than previous years, and rewards for expressive black currant flavors enhanced with lots of fine, smoky new oak.
