The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer comes across as ethereal at first, then gains volume and shape in the glass. Dark red fruit, minerals, mint, flowers, spices and anise are all woven together nicely. There is plenty of length, persistence and Howell Mountain character on the finish. Graphite, black currant, crushed rock, and black raspberry notes as well as a decidedly cool climate character are found in the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Ranch. This wine is all about structure, minerality, and backwardness. Give it 5-6 years of bottle age and keep your fingers crossed that the tannins melt away and more fruit emerges.
