Spada's 2006 Gladius (Aglianico, Piedirosso) reveals a striking profile of violets, flowers, mint, spices, dark cherries, French oak and new leather in an engaging style. This is a gorgeous, vibrant wine full of promise. With a little more varietal character the Spada could very well merit a higher score. It remains a relatively soft, well-balanced red to enjoy over the next few years. This is another delicious wine from the slopes of the Roccamonfina volcano. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
