Deep garnet with a hint of purple to the color, the 2007 Barossa Babe Shiraz has aromas of warm plums, dried mulberries and blackberry tart with underlying hints of sandalwood, tree bark and potpourri. Some meatiness comes through on the full bodied palate intermingling with the black fruits. It has a medium level of soft tannins and lively acid to lend support, finishing long and berry laced. The 2004 “Barossa Babe” Shiraz, the wine with the “babe” on the back label, was aged for 18 months in French oak, 46% new. Much of the fruit came from ancient, 140-year-old vines. Purple-colored, it exhibits a fragrant perfume of pain grille, smoke, black pepper, espresso, tar, plum and blackberry. This is followed by a full-bodied wine that manages to combine elegance with its obvious power. There are tons of ripe fruit, layers of flavor, well-concealed tannins, and a long finish.
